Great linking strategies
Finding link partners can be a pleasurable, yet time consuming, task or it can be a nightmare! We want to help make things easier on you and help your site get good rankings, higher traffic, and increased sales!
Finding good link partners basically boils down to a couple of options:
- You can put in some serious time online to find high quality partners
- You can task it out
- You can use software
Finding good partners is serious business!
Your link partners need to be relevant to your site content, potentially useful to your visitors, and of good standing with the major search engines; especially Google.
Don't follow these guidelines and Google will penalize your site and eventually you risk being booted right out of Google! You can ask 100's of people using the Zues linking program; they are living proof!
Your linking partners are reflective of your site as well; no matter how many disclaimers, etc... you post on your site the average site viewer will view a link from your site to another as an endorsement. Do you feel the sites your linking to are worthy of endorsement?  Thoroughly check out your link partner sites!
With that said, let's move onto the finding of partners.

Usually the tools we use and list as useful are not all that widely known yet; so this is where you can get you ahead of the competition in Page Rank in Link assisted popularity and reputation!
Next - A great place to start is with google itself, you will find Google is our primary focus and if you're serious about e-Biz it should be yours too; but don't ignore Yahoo, or MSN, either! Yahoo and MSN are going to be in serious competition with Google for providing search results soon!
Begin by looking up the keywords you want to found under; see who's holding the 1st page position; if they aren't competition and they have a links page then ask them to link! Continue on down the search results through about the third to fifth page of results.
Use your Google Toolbar, or Google search box and type in "your keyword and links" - you'll find some potential partners here; some junk sites, competitors, and non-relevant ones too, but some will be good potentials none-the-less. Play with the words, try variations of your keywords and the words link, links, add url, reciprocal link(s).
You're well on your way to a nice set of potential partners!
Gathering the data: A great way to do this is on a spreadsheet - listing the splice of link code of theirs that you'll actually use on your site; Their business name (for when you contact them); their Contact Email Address; the location of their link pages, and sometimes it might not hurt to grab their phone number (in case you would like to call them about reciprocation instead of emailing.
As a rule of thumb, you can't preach to the non-believer!
Many people, although wrong, will tell you that linking is bad, evil, etc... so, if a site has no links/resources page then don't waste your time or theirs as 99% of the time they aren't going to link to you! Additionally if you're emailing a site not actively participating in link exchange they could very well turn you in for spamming!!
Now that you're done looking in Google.
Once you're done looking through Google and those sites occupying the top positions for your keywords; go to Dmoz, she is the largest human edited open source directory.
Where Google is concerned, if your site or your link partners are in Dmoz then you're already moving ahead with a great link popularity strategy! Find the partners you want in the specific category you want or your target audience related categories. Add them to your spreadsheet.
You're well on your way to a targeted list!
You've gathered your potential partners, now what?
Add their links to your resources page (we do recommend not entitling the page link partners, reciprocal links, etc... rather name the page what it is - resources.
You're adding them to your site first to show them that you are sincere about the exchange taking place; most sites require it anyway.)
Lastly; make contact and begin getting the reciprocation!
If they don't respond right away, email again in a couple of days, 4-5 days in between mailings does work well, and email them upto 5 times if you need to!! Create a series of email templates that you can use for each letter.
Sounds easy enough, right? Well it is for the most part; the draw-back lies with TIME - once you start doing this you'll find that it's a very time consuming process!
Finding the right partners could mean looking at 125 or more different sites, just to get 25 good link partners! ...then there is the contact phase, also a time consumer, and then you have to go back and make sure they are linked! Sometimes people say, "sure, we'll link," yet as you know things can "come-up" and you space adding the link; sometimes they need a little reminder; this is why the email letter series is a good idea!
Checking for linkbacks
Indeed there are a vast number of "reciprocal link checkers," but I have not found one that's accurate enough to even waste my time with; if you're serious about linking then you have to look! You have to physically check and make sure your linked! You can keep track of who's linking and where they are linking from exactly with a spreadsheet. (Or check out the Link Script from Linking 101 mentioned below.)
Solutions to Easier link Building:
There are basically three solutions.

Because you entered them they do have a link on the auto-generated resources page - find out the URL of where their link is located on your site so that you can let them know exactly where it is.
(Due to PageRank mania many sites will not link to a site if the linkback location is PR0, so if you can - add a link into your predefined link partner categories so that the page will be generated for that category. Always keep in mind though; it is increasingly becoming more and more important within search engines to factor in which sites recommend other sites. The SEs do this through counting not only the quantity of incoming links but also the quality. They are ranked and the keywords used within the anchor text make for an influencing factor of web site optimization. Outbound links also factor in and you need keep them to a minimum; especially if they aren't linking back to you - it is wise to have a few links out from your site that aren't actually linking back to you! Those that utilize keyword rich text, in conjunction with good linking strategies will help to build an authoritative site with the search engines. Increased traffic, sales, and more... all through the right linking strategy!
